Ground Power Units (GPU)

A Ground Power Unit (GPU) is a mobile or stationary device which is used to provide electrical power to aircraft while they are on the ground. When an aircraft is on the ground, it requires electricity to run various systems, such as lights, avionics, cabin services, ramp operations and air conditioning. This power can either come from the on-board auxiliary power unit (APU) or the ground power unit (GPU). The GPU is connected through a cable to the aircraft and provides the necessary electrical power to operate the on-board systems. In general, the GPU provides 115 Volt Alternating Current (AC) at 400 Hz only smaller aircraft operate with 28 Volt Direct Current (DC).

Types of Ground Power Units

Mobile GPUs
Mounted on carts or vehicles, mobile GPUs can be easily moved between aircraft. These are ideal for busy ramps and flexible operations. Mobile GPU typically consist of diesel power generator or a large electrical battery and can be either towable trailer mounted or mounted on a truck. Fixed or Bridge-Mounted GPUs
A Fixed or Bridge-Mounted Ground Power Unit (GPU) is a permanent aircraft power solution installed directly on a passenger boarding bridge or at a fixed point on the apron. It supplies reliable electrical power to aircraft while they are parked at the gate, eliminating the need to run the aircraft’s auxiliary power unit (APU).

This setup is commonly used at busy commercial airports where fast turnaround times, lower operating costs, and reduced emissions are priorities. Because it is permanently installed, it is always available at the gate and does not require repositioning like mobile units.

Diesel-Powered GPUs
A diesel-powered GPU usually means a Ground Power Unit that runs on diesel fuel. A diesel-powered GPU is a self-contained ground power unit designed to supply reliable electrical power to aircraft while they are parked. It allows the aircraft’s onboard systems to run without using the APU, reducing fuel burn, noise, and wear on internal components. Reliable and powerful, diesel units are often used in remote locations or where consistent high output is required. Electric GPUs
Battery powered GPUs are referred to as eGPU. eGPU are much more silent than diesel GPU so it is pleasure for both boarding passengers and operating staffs. An eGPU also plays an important role for greener and healthier environment which can reduce the noise and CO2 emissions. Due to lower running costs than diesel powered GPU for no moving parts, vulnerable to wear and tear the total cost of ownership for eGPU is lower after few years than diesel engine. Quiet and eco-friendly, electric models are increasingly preferred at modern airports focused on sustainability goals.
